Maybe my expectations were too high coming into this film the last time I reviewed a gay Swedish movie, I unknowingly stepped into Levan Akin’s And Then We Danced (2019), one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen. Although he’s engaged in an affair with a young swimmer named Charles (Christian Arnold), the schoolmaster can’t stop fantasizing about all of his students, and all the while he’s haunted by the homophobia and violence of his past. As a group of friends prepares for a (never-fully-explained) prestigious holiday singing procession, jealousy and romance cause strife among them, all under the watchful eye of the pathetically horny schoolmaster (Johan Ehn).
